Notable personal detailsColin Zachary Allred is an American politician, civil rights lawyer, and former professional football player. He served as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 32nd congressional district from 2019 to 2025. He played linebacker in the National Football League, including with the Tennessee Titans, before practicing law and entering politics.
Supports measures to raise tax fairness for corporations and wealthier individuals while expanding tax relief for families; has criticized the 2017 GOP tax cuts and backed a corporate minimum tax and expansions of the Child Tax Credit. Also proposes policies to lower costs for Texas families (including repealing tariffs) as part of a campaign affordability agenda.
Supports strengthening and defending the Affordable Care Act, expanding Medicaid in Texas, lowering the Medicare eligibility age and creating a Medicare buy-in/public option to increase access and lower costs; also prioritizes lowering prescription drug prices.
Supports comprehensive immigration reform that secures the border while protecting DREAMers and creating a pathway to earned citizenship; has voted for legislation providing permanent protections and pathways for DACA/TPS recipients. Endorses resources for Border Patrol and border communities alongside reform measures.
The candidate supports codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law and has consistently advocated for protecting and restoring abortion access. He has cosponsored federal legislation expanding abortion protections and has opposed Texas’ state abortion bans.
Supports strong action on climate while favoring an ‘‘all‑of‑the‑above’’ energy approach that grows renewable energy through incentives and federal investment in clean technologies (including carbon capture) and permitting reforms, while accepting continued fossil fuel use during a transition. Has a high lifetime environmental score from the League of Conservation Voters and has campaigned on making Texas a leader in wind and solar job creation.
Supports expanded background checks, extreme risk (red flag) laws, safe-storage measures, and federal action on assault-style weapons and other gun-safety reforms while affirming lawful gun ownership. Helped pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and has received endorsements from gun-violence-prevention organizations for backing these measures.
Colin Allred is in a Democratic runoff for Texas’s 33rd Congressional District against Julie Johnson after neither candidate won a majority in the primary. The race has centered on turnout and attacks over stock trades, immigration, and ICE policy, and the runoff winner is widely expected to become the Democratic nominee. Allred had previously dropped a Senate bid to enter this House race. Earlier coverage also noted a public dispute with another Texas Democrat, James Talarico, over alleged racially charged remarks.
