Notable personal detailsDouglas Vincent Mastriano is a Republican Pennsylvania state senator representing the 33rd district. He is a retired U.S. Army colonel and has taught at the U.S. Army War College. Mastriano earned a BA from Eastern University and holds a PhD in history along with multiple master’s degrees. He was the Republican nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2022.
Supports reducing taxes and tax relief measures for Pennsylvanians and businesses, including proposals to eliminate or reduce property and gas taxes and to provide tax relief for small businesses and pass-through entities. Has sponsored legislation and supported bills aimed at cutting state gasoline taxes, abolishing certain double taxation for small-business partners, and pursuing mechanisms to eliminate school property taxes.
Supports rolling back public-health mandates (including proposing the Medical Freedom Act to ban COVID-19 vaccine mandates) and opposes public funding for Planned Parenthood while prioritizing anti‑abortion measures; has not promoted Medicare‑for‑All or major government expansions of health coverage in campaign materials. His public statements and legislation emphasize individual medical choice and deregulation rather than expanded government programs.
Supports stronger border enforcement and state-level actions to limit illegal immigration, including deploying the Pennsylvania National Guard to the U.S.–Mexico border, increasing cooperation between state/local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, and proposing measures intended to deter undocumented immigration (for example, fees on remittances).
Supports bans on abortion from early pregnancy and has said life begins at conception; opposes exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother and has stated that women who obtain abortions should be subject to criminal prosecution. Has sponsored heartbeat-era restrictions and advocated for strict legal penalties for providers and patients.
Opposes new gun restrictions and supports broad Second Amendment protections including constitutional (permitless) carry and measures to block enforcement of federal firearm limits in Pennsylvania. Has promoted arming schools and described gun-control efforts as threats to gun ownership. Receives endorsements from pro-gun organizations and has sponsored state legislation to prohibit enforcement of certain federal firearms actions in the Commonwealth.
Doug Mastriano is in the news because supporters are still running a write-in campaign for him in Pennsylvania’s Republican gubernatorial primary, even after Donald Trump nominated him to be U.S. ambassador to Slovakia. The effort is aimed at upsetting state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who is the only Republican on the ballot and is now the party’s favored candidate. Mastriano has said he will stay in the Pennsylvania state Senate until his nomination is confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
