Notable personal detailsJohn Francis “Jack” Reed is a Democratic U.S. senator from Rhode Island, first elected in 1996 and serving since 1997, after representing Rhode Island’s 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House (1991–1997). He is a U.S. Army veteran who served on active duty from 1971 to 1979 and in the Army Reserve until 1991, retiring as a major. Reed is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and earned graduate degrees from Harvard University (Master of Public Policy and Juris Doctor).
Supports tax reforms that reduce burdens on middle-class families and small businesses, expand credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, and close tax loopholes used by wealthy individuals and corporations. Opposed the 2017 Republican corporate tax bill as favoring the wealthy and has sponsored/endorsed legislation to end carried-interest and inversion tax advantages. Advocates simplifying the code while ensuring corporations and the ultra-wealthy pay a fairer share.

Jack Reed has been speaking out against several Trump administration moves, especially on foreign policy and defense. He said Trump’s Iran policy made the conflict worse, criticized U.S. strikes on alleged drug boats as lacking clear evidence and goals, and warned that pulling 5,000 troops from Germany could weaken alliances and security commitments. Reed also criticized the removal of Navy Secretary John Phelan as destabilizing for the Pentagon.
