BackgroundMinnesota state representative
Notable personal detailsKaela Berg is a Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, first elected in 2020 and representing District 55B (previously 56B). She has worked as a flight attendant and as an independent labor consultant, and has been active in union organizing and labor issues. In 2025, she announced a campaign for Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District.
Supports raising taxes on high-income earners and addressing what she calls an unfair tax structure; sponsored legislation to create a new top individual income tax tier to offset lost federal Medicaid funds.
Supports expanding access to affordable healthcare including coverage for pre-existing conditions, mental health and chemical-dependency treatment, and expanded reproductive care; advocates lowering out-of-pocket costs and regulating hospital mergers and profit-driven structures in public insurance. Positions emphasize strengthening public programs and broader access rather than full privatization or repeal.
Opposes aggressive ICE enforcement actions and supports access to services for immigrants; has publicly confronted ICE and opposed measures to strip state healthcare from undocumented residents.
Supports codifying and defending abortion and reproductive freedom in Minnesota law, describes abortion as healthcare and a right, and has voted for state legislation (the PRO Act) to protect reproductive freedoms and related privacy and contraception rights.
Supports aggressive clean-energy targets and legislation to decarbonize Minnesota’s electricity sector and advance clean-energy jobs; co-authored and voted for a bill to require 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040 and has sponsored/advocated for procurement and clean-construction measures to favor low-carbon materials.
Supports expanded gun violence prevention measures including universal/background checks for private transfers, Extreme Risk Protection Orders (red flag laws), stronger penalties for straw purchases, required reporting of lost/stolen firearms, and bans on devices (binary/trigger activators) that increase firearm lethality.
Kaela Berg was among the candidates suspended and fined by Kalshi after the company said she bet on her own race, which it described as political insider trading. The company said it has since added safeguards to stop candidates from trading on their own elections. More recently, Minnesota has begun early voting for its 2026 primary, where Berg is part of a crowded and competitive election season.
