Notable personal detailsDaniel R. Hawkins is an American lawyer and judge who has served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio since December 10, 2024. Before joining the Supreme Court, he served on the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) and previously on the Franklin County Municipal Court Environmental Division. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, including as director of its Special Victims Unit. He earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Bowling Green State University and a J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

Dan Hawkins has been publicly aligned with anti-abortion and pro-life groups in Ohio. His 2024 Ohio Supreme Court campaign was endorsed by Ohio Right to Life, which said the endorsement was intended to support candidates who would protect life and preserve abortion restrictions.
Public Safety & Guns
Dan Hawkins authored an Ohio Supreme Court opinion allowing Columbus to immediately appeal a preliminary injunction blocking city ordinances that restricted firearm magazine capacity and storage, while explicitly declining to address the merits of those laws. His court biography also says he spent 13 years as a trial prosecutor and later led the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit.
