Ken Calvert supports lowering taxes and has consistently voted for Republican tax-cut legislation, arguing that tax relief and permanent business expensing spur economic growth and put more money in taxpayers’ paychecks. He voted for the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and has publicly supported subsequent House GOP bills to extend or expand tax cuts and child tax credits.
Opposes a single‑payer/Medicare for All approach and supports market competition in health care. Voted for a 2025 House budget reconciliation bill that would reduce federal spending including Medicaid and characterized work requirements and program changes as sensible ways to address waste and fraud.
Supports stronger immigration enforcement and cooperation with ICE, including detaining and removing criminal noncitizens and withholding federal funds from jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Emphasizes border security and criticizes perceived ‘‘open-border’’ policies while framing legal immigration as welcome for those who follow the law.
The candidate has supported overturning Roe v. Wade, has cosponsored federal personhood legislation (the Life at Conception Act), and has voted against bills to codify or protect abortion and contraception access; he has said abortion policy should be left to the states and has indicated support for exceptions for rape, incest, and health.
The candidate supports increasing domestic fossil fuel production, reducing regulatory barriers to energy development, and prioritizing energy independence and lower energy costs while criticizing aggressive climate regulations. He has voted for bills to expand American energy production and described administration climate policies as harmful to energy production and consumers.
Ken Calvert has a pro-Second Amendment voting record and has voted against expanded federal gun restrictions such as an assault weapons ban and universal background-check legislation. He has high ratings from pro-gun organizations. His public record emphasizes support for gun rights while opposing major new federal firearm regulations.
Ken Calvert is in the news because redistricting has forced him into a bitter Republican-on-Republican primary against Young Kim in California’s 40th Congressional District. The race is drawing heavy spending, outside money, and sharp attacks over Trump loyalty, immigration, and experience. It is also a volatile top-two contest that could still send two Republicans, or a Republican and a Democrat, to the general election.
