2026 District of Columbia Elections FAQ

When is the 2026 District of Columbia primary election?
Answer coming soon.
When is the 2026 District of Columbia general election?
Answer coming soon.
What races are on the ballot in District of Columbia in 2026?
Mayor, attorney general, Delegate to the US House, Council chair, at-large and ward Council seats (Wards 1, 3, 5, and 6), and shadow congressional posts are up in 2026; nominees are chosen in the June 16 primary ahead of the November 3 general election. A same-day June 16 special election fills the at-large Council seat Kenyan McDuffie vacated. DC has no governor or US Senate races.
How does District of Columbia's primary work?
DC holds closed party primaries: only voters registered with the Democratic, Republican, or DC Statehood Green parties can participate, and independents are excluded. The June 16, 2026 primary is the District's first to use ranked-choice voting, letting voters rank up to five candidates per office. Initiative 83's companion provision opening primaries to independents was not funded for 2026, and there is no primary runoff.
Why is the 2026 District of Columbia US House race important?
The District's only seat in Congress, a non-voting House delegate, is open for the first time since 1990 after Eleanor Holmes Norton ended her re-election campaign in January 2026. Because the District votes overwhelmingly Democratic, the June 16 Democratic primary, the first conducted with ranked-choice voting, is widely seen as the decisive contest.
