2026 Maine Elections FAQ

When is the 2026 Maine primary election?
The 2026 Maine primary election is on Jun 9, 2026.
When is the 2026 Maine general election?
The 2026 Maine general election is on Nov 3, 2026.
What races are on the ballot in Maine in 2026?
Maine's November 3, 2026 ballot includes an open race for governor, a US Senate seat held by Republican Susan Collins, both US House districts, all 35 State Senate and all 151 State House seats, plus county offices. Maine has no lieutenant governor, and the attorney general, secretary of state and treasurer are chosen by the Legislature rather than elected statewide.
How does Maine's primary work?
Maine held a semi-open primary on June 9, 2026. Voters enrolled in a party received that party's ballot, while unenrolled voters could choose one party's primary without joining it. Ballots use ranked-choice voting: if no candidate wins a majority of first choices, trailing candidates are eliminated and votes redistribute until someone passes 50 percent, so there is no separate runoff election.
Why is the 2026 Maine Governor race important?
Maine's governorship is open for the first time since 2018: Governor Janet Mills, a Democrat, is term-limited after two terms. Five Democrats and a multi-candidate Republican field competed in the June 9 primaries, and both nominations went to ranked-choice tabulation. The winner in November will shape policy in a state that also hosts one of the cycle's most watched Senate races.
